The working photographer’s go-to zooms – M.Zuiko 12-40mm vs. Lumix 12-35mm

The lens that many working photographers consider an essential part of their kit, regardless of the system they use, is the 24-70mm constant aperture zoom (full frame equivalent). It is an especially useful range for events such as weddings or conferences where you are dealing with moving subjects, tight spaces and varied compositions, from wide-angle shots of the location to close-ups of attendees and specific details. Though these zooms don’t deliver the same sharpness or brightness as high-quality prime lenses, they are useful for fast-paced events where changing lenses isn’t practical.

As of today, there are two mid-range constant aperture zooms for Micro Four Thirds. The Panasonic Lumix 12-35mm has been around since mid-2012, while the M.Zuiko 12-40mm made its appearance in late 2013 when the OM-D E-M1 was launched. Both feature a constant aperture of 2.8, meaning that they can be used even in difficult light conditions.

What happens when you have three interesting portrait lenses all at the same time? You do a comparison shootout of course!

At the end of last week, we received both the new Zeiss Batis 85mm and Sony 90mm macro lenses for testing. The Sony FE system is rapidly expanding, so much that we certainly can’t complain about the lack of lenses anymore. Among the focal lengths that many people were waiting for, there was a good portrait lens. Zeiss designed the 85mm (along with the 25mm f/2) to inaugurate its second family of lenses made specifically for the Sony full frame mirrorless cameras called Batis.

At this year’s Photokina, the one aspect that all the different brands had in common as far as the mirrorless world is concerned was an increase in size as evidenced by the most recent lenses showcased. This aspect seems to have triggered different reactions. One of the criticisms is that the increase in size has made them closer to a DSLR system, therefore nullifying the main advantage: compactness and lightness. The discussion is most pertinent to Micro Four Thirds, a system well-known for its compact cameras and compact lenses.
