Visiting Puffins on Skomer Island with the Panasonic GH5 and GX80

Last week, Mathieu and I ticked off a big item on our bucket list: seeing and photographing the puffins on Skomer Island in South Wales.

Every year between April and August, these beloved birds flock in the thousands to the island to breed, only to return to the sea for the rest of the year once their chicks have fledged.

2016 was another amazing year for us here at MirrorLessons and here are just a few of the reasons!

we launched Mirrorless Curation, our second website, exactly one year ago

we started up a third website called Mirrorless Comparison where we focus on comparisons between cameras and lenses

we put more effort into growing our MirrorLessons YouTube channel, which now has over 13,000 followers and is rapidly growing

we attended our second Photokina where we connected with many of our photography-loving friends, followers and colleagues and tried out loads of new gear

we spent our second year living in Wales and managed to explore more of the country than ever before

Voigtländer 12mm f/5.6 for Sony E-Mount Sample Images and First Impressions

Since the release of the first generation of A7 cameras, I’ve had the chance to test some Voigtländer M-mount lenses on the A7 and then the A7r mark II. The first camera had various issues: heavy purple fringing, vignetting and colour shift but the results got better with the new sensors as you can see here. When the brand announced that it would release a new version of its lenses with a dedicated E-mount, I liked the idea.

It had been a while since I last went to my favourite red kite feeding station to photograph these magnificent birds in flight. Luckily for me, a new opportunity came up when I received the Sigma MC-11 EF to E-mount adapter to review last week. One of the lenses I asked the brand to send along with it was the 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary, which I’d used on the A7r mark II for the same purpose but with the Metabones mark IV adapter last year. I was curious to see if the new MC-11 would communicate better with a Sigma lens and give me better results.

My family has the quirky tradition of tracking down and photographing a new species of butterfly every summer. This year, we settled upon the Silver Studded Blue, so named for the light blue reflective scales on the underside of its wing that glint in the sunlight. Most colonies are scattered along the southern coast of the UK, but there are some exceptions such as the Great Orme in Llandudno, a spot renowned for its rare flora and fauna. Since Llandudno is only two hours from where we live, this is where we decided to try our luck!
