There is a farm in Mid-Wales called Gigrin where more than 300 red kites are fed everyday by a member of the family-run business. The birds, with a wingspan of 1.8 metres, battle not only with one another but also against crows, ravens and buzzards for the best pieces of meat. We even saw a cat sneaking onto the field to steal a chunk for dinner. While observing all this (and it is fascinating to watch), we took the opportunity to push the Sony A7r mark II’s autofocus capabilities to the extreme by mounting the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary (Canon EF mount) and the Metabones Mark IV adapter to take some shots of the birds in action.

Race the Train 2015 – Olympus OM-D E-M10 II Sample Image Gallery
Nearly two weeks have passed since this year’s edition of the Race the Train cross country running event took place here in Wales. Every year, runners come from all over the world to compete not only against one another but also against a steam train on our beloved Talyllyn Railway. Travelling from Tywyn to Abergynolyn and back again, the distance works out to be about 23 km or 14 miles. While it is possible to beat the train back to the station, only the fittest runners ever achieve this goal.

Narrow gauge railways are a large tourist attraction in North Wales, with the most famous being the Ffestiniog Railway, which used to transport slate from quarries of Blanau Ffestiniog to the seaside town of Porthmaddog.
Nearly as famous is the Talyllyn Railway, the line that used to run between Tywyn and the slate mines of Bryn Eglwys but now only takes passengers as far as Nant Gwerol, which we photographed a few months ago.
The Pirate Weekend in Conwy – A Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) Gallery
What’s not to like about a friendly bunch of pirates happy to be photographed? This past Sunday, Heather and I went back to Conwy for the Pirate Weekend, nearly a month after the Gran Fondo Conwy race. It consisted of two days of games, cannon fire demonstrations, music, food, and of course, lots of people appropriately dressed for the occasion. I thought that black and white could suit the pirate costumes well, so I brought along the new Leica Monochrom Typ 246, which I am currently reviewing.
