Happy Birthday MirrorLessons || The Launch of Our Flickr Pool

This time last year, in the midst of hurried Christmas and New Years preparations, Heather and I were frantically adding the final touches to what would become a project that would change our lives as we knew them. It was a project that would give a new definition to the word ‘photography’ as we had experienced it up to that point. It was a project that would open doors to new people, places and possibilities.

That project was Mirrorlessons, which is celebrating its first birthday today! And by pure coincidence, it’s Heather’s birthday as well. Happy 29th!

2014 is at the door: It’s been a great year, folks!

With the end of 2013 drawing near, the time has come for us to sum up the year and what it meant for the mirrorless world.

I don’t like to create rankings of the best and worst cameras of the year because camera preference is mostly a personal matter and what is good for me could be bad for you. What I can say, however, is that it has certainly been a very interesting year for mirrorless cameras. And from the news and rumours we’ve read so far, 2014 could be an even better year than 2013.

I think everyone here would agree that cancer has been a thorn in our sides for far too long. My paternal grandfather died of it, a handful of our friends and family had or are suffering from it, and I am sure that everyone here has lost someone due to it.

This is why we at Mirrorlessons have decided to hold our first ever Movember campaign dubbed Mirrorlessons for Movember!

Halloween is still a relatively new phenomenon here in Italy but its popularity has exploded in the past few years. Go to any school and you will find children dressed up as witches, ghosts and pumpkins. Visit a discoteca on Halloween night and you’ll probably end up with a demon as your dancing partner.

Fifteen years ago, you would never have heard the words “dolcetto, scherzetto” (trick or treat) on the streets, but North American commercialism has a cunning way of weaving itself into the fabric of foreign cultures. I remember that during my one year stay in Japan back in 2006, Halloween was almost more popular there than it was in Canada, my home country. Though it hasn’t reached that level of popularity here in Italy, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time…

The Fujifilm X-E2 and XQ1 become official and the X100 gets a boost

We finish off the work week with the third camera announcement in three days. First there were the Sony A7 and A7r full frame mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, then there was the super-small and compact Panasonic Lumix GM1, and now we have the the Fujifilm X-E2, the successor to the high-end X-E1 model, and the compact XQ1.

The announcement of the Fujifilm X-E2 is exciting because Fuji has the tendency to improve its older models with firmware updates rather than replace them with newer versions. Unlike other camera companies which push out new models with every tiny improvement and new feature, Fuji only releases something new when they really feel it’s necessary. And even older models already replaced by newer versions still get the T.L.C. they deserve from the company. Today’s X100 firmware update is a good example of this.
