Summing up Photokina 2014: Final thoughts, unique discoveries, and thank-yous

It is on a bittersweet note that our complete coverage of the 2014 edition of Photokina draws to a close. During six days of non-stop hands-on and meetings, we managed to write 26 different articles including news, hands-on and interviews. But if you think that this number high, the truth is that there were still many things we didn’t have the time to see or try, and there were even halls we didn’t visited. It is renowned as the biggest photo show in the world for a reason, after all.

Leica announced plenty of new products at Photokina and its booth was also one of the most elegant including a very nice gallery featuring Leica photographers from all over the world. After our interview with Rachel Barker (Head of PR), we stopped at the various desks to try the new products.

Two of them were related to the history of the brand. After releasing a special edition of the Leica M for to celebrate 100 years of Leica photography, the German camera brand also announced another special edition to celebrate 60 years of the M system. There was also a new film M camera that pays tribute to and supports the use of film and analogue photography.

So, what are these two new Leica M cameras exactly?

After trying the new X100T, X30 and XF lenses at the Fujifilm media session, we stopped at the Fujifilm press lounge to talk with Riccardo Scotti, product manager for Fujifilm Italy. We discussed not only the new products announced just before Photokina, but also the growing interest in the system from professional photographers, customer support, full-frame and other interesting topics.

For over two years, Sony has managed to monopolise the high-end point-and-shoot market with its RX100 series. The original RX100 made its debut in June 2012, whereas the third generation came out only a few months ago. It was the world’s first truly pocketable high-end camera which, with the help of its 20MP 1-inch sensor, became a very appealing second “carry-around” body for professionals and advanced shooters, and had remained unrivalled up until this year’s Photokina, when the brand new Canon PowerShot G7X came onto the scene.
